My One Word | The Savvy Peach
It seems that we start every year with a laundry list of things to make our lives better. By the spring this list is lost and we continue to fall back into our old ways. Am I alone here? Bueller?
In 2016, I even went as far as breaking down my goals quarterly. They still fell short, simply because where I was in January and where I am now are different - my business is different, my relationships are different, I am different. Growth and flexibility are necessary and I felt like my goals didn't grow or flex! I scrapped them and moved on about June.
In order to make 2017 the best yet (& to help me stay focused), I have decided to trash the list and settle on one word that embodies everything I want out of this year. One word that will be central to all of my goals from my health to my family, from my biz to my friendships.
Have you heard about this? You select one word that you focus on for the entire year - one word that encompasses everything you are striving for in life? How empowering - one word instead of a long list of to do's! It seems so freeing to me (and I'm relieved that I won't have several items that I don't accomplish by the time we ring in 2018.)
In order to come up with my word I followed the process I read about at MyOneWord.org.
Step 1: Determine the kind of person you want to become.
I personally wanted to be more deliberate about pursuing God, engaging my family, and being present in my business. Balancing all of these things, I wanted to really focus on finishing items on my to do list no matter where they fall in life. I want to be a person who can accomplish the goals I set.
Step 2: Identify the characteristics of that person.
When I got to this step, I started making a list of words that came to mind when I thought about what I wanted 2017 to be. This list included words such as complete, finished, act, achieve, present, thrive, live, love, take initiative, work, experience, active, move, etc.
Step 3: Pick a word.
This step was the hardest for me. What word really captures all of these? MyOneWord.org says, “there might be fifteen things that you want to change, but you must resist the temptation to promise you will do them all. Instead, simply commit to ONE WORD.” Picking my ONE word took some time, a lot of prayer and a lot of dreaming.
After rethinking all of the things that I felt didn't go exactly how I wanted last year, I settled on a word - a word that would help me make sure that I follow through and finish. My word for 2017 is ACTION.
Action (ac·tion \ˈak-shən\) is defined as “a thing done, a deed” and “the accomplishment of a thing usually over a period of time, in stages or with the possibility of repetition” by Merriam Webster. Doesn’t that sound like a great word to hold onto for my biz? Yes, I agree!
I encourage you to take the time to pick your word. Scrap the ridiculous list of resolutions that you’re never going to accomplish and settle on a word that really is who YOU are and what YOU want to be this year. What is your word? I’d love to hear it! Send me a note on my Facebook page or send me an email (steph@thesavvypeach.com) to share your word for 2017. I’d love to make you a little something special to help you keep your word front and center for the year. It’s my new year gift to you.
